Why iOS says your ringtone is too long — and the fix

Short answer: iOS only accepts ringtones of 30 seconds or less. When a file runs longer, the Files app does not offer Use as Ringtone, and GarageBand asks to shorten it. The fix is to cut the song below 30 seconds: open RingTrim, mark the part you want, tap iPhone, then set the new file.

Cut your song to under 30 seconds

Steps

  1. Open RingTrim and tap “Choose a song or video”. Pick the same file that iOS refused.
  2. Drag the handles around the part you want. The counter stops the selection at the iPhone limit, so it cannot end up too long again.
  3. Tap iPhone and save the new M4R file. It lands in Files → Downloads.
  4. In Files, touch and hold the new file, tap Share, then Use as Ringtone.

What “too long” looks like on each route

iOS 26, Files app Use as Ringtone is not offered for the file, so there is nothing to tap.
GarageBand (iOS 18 and earlier) A message says the ringtone needs to be shortened, with an option to shorten it automatically.
Finder or iTunes sync The tone usually syncs without complaint and then never appears in Settings.

Why the automatic fix picks the wrong part

GarageBand’s shortcut keeps the first 30 seconds of the song. For most music that is an intro: quiet, slow, and gone before the part anyone recognises. Choosing the section yourself takes a few seconds longer and gives you a ringtone you will actually know is yours.

In RingTrim, tap Chorus or Loudest to jump to a likely section, then nudge the start with the ±0.1 s buttons until it lands on a beat.

Trimmed it and it still will not install?

Questions

Does iOS say “ringtone too long” in so many words?

Not in the Files app. There, a file that is too long simply does not get the Use as Ringtone option. GarageBand is the one that shows a message asking you to shorten it.

Can I keep a longer song and let iOS cut it?

No. The Files route will not accept it, and GarageBand only keeps the opening 30 seconds. Choosing the part yourself is the only way to get the section you want.

How short is short enough?

Anything up to 30 seconds. RingTrim files stop a few hundredths of a second before that, so they always fit.
