How long can an iPhone ringtone be?

Short answer: An iPhone ringtone can be up to 30 seconds long. The limit applies to the iOS 26 Files route and to GarageBand. Text tones can technically run 30 seconds as well, though most people keep them under 10. Anything longer is not offered as a ringtone, so trim the file first.

Make a ringtone that fits the limit

Steps

  1. Open RingTrim and choose your song, voice memo or video.
  2. Stay on the Ringtone tab. It will not let the selection grow past the limit.
  3. Switch to the Text tone tab instead if you want a short alert; it stops at 10 seconds.
  4. Tap iPhone, save the file, then install it from the Files app.

Where the 40-second figure comes from

Older guides, written for syncing tones through iTunes, quote 40 seconds. Several ringtone sites still repeat it. It does not apply to the routes people use today: GarageBand and the iOS 26 Files app both stop at 30.

Why RingTrim files are 29.95 seconds, not 30.00

An M4R file holds AAC audio in fixed packets of 1,024 samples, roughly 23 milliseconds each at CD quality. The encoder also adds one packet of start-up audio. Fill the last packet of a clip that is exactly 30.000 seconds long and the file measures a sliver over 30.

RingTrim leaves one packet spare, so a full-length ringtone comes out at 29.95 seconds (29.97 for 48 kHz sources). You cannot hear the difference, and iOS never sees a file over the line.

How long a ringtone actually plays

A ringtone loops until you answer or the call goes to voicemail, so a shorter tone simply repeats sooner. A clean loop point matters more than squeezing in every last second.

Questions

Is the limit 30 seconds or 40 seconds?

30 seconds for every current way of adding a ringtone to an iPhone. The 40-second figure dates from syncing tones with iTunes.

Can a text tone be 30 seconds?

Yes, iOS allows it, but a long text tone gets cut off by the next notification. RingTrim’s Text tone tab stops at 10 seconds for that reason.

Is there a minimum length?

iOS sets none that matters in practice. RingTrim asks for at least half a second so a mis-tap does not produce an empty file.
